Fin del Gran Viaje / End of the great journey

Today, 8 September 1522, and after a voyage that surpasses the limits of reality and fiction, we human beings set sail (as far as we know) for the first time around our home, planet Earth, five hundred years ago.

And to this tireless traveller, to whom life has granted the good fortune of being able to sail up the Guadalquivir River and enter Seville on the bow of the Nao Victoria, (the only one of the five vessels that completed the feat), of being able to inhabit the creaking of its timbers and call them respectfully home for a few months, of sharing the winds of change with its sails, to fly together over a wide sea of infinite horizons, I would like to honour that titanic feat in my own terms.

My heartfelt tribute goes to the human beings who, beyond the flags of their place of origin, for the feat is so incredible that it surpasses the ego of any nation, ventured into the unknown, into an uncertain horizon, as full of desires as it is of anxieties, of hopes as it is of frustrations, of death as it is of life.

It is to them, to the eighteen Juanes Sebastian Elcano and Antonios de Pigafetta, who returned ragged after three long years of voyage, without teeth, without health, without strength, but with the feat in their hands of having completed a real odyssey, and above all, to the other two hundred and twenty who perished during the Great Voyage, among them the great sailor Ferdinand Magellan, that I pay tribute.

More than to the event, more than to the date, more than to the ship or the flags, to the men who made it possible. For it was they, with their silences in the middle of the night, their memories full of melancholy, their insignificant and empty conversations in the middle of the very blue nothingness, their suffering, their need for love, their hunger, their desperation, their warmth and their cold, their lost gazes at the high sky, their prayers and longings for solid ground, their quarrels, hatreds and resentments, their joys and their convictions, their eyes full of stars, those who five hundred years ago today proved to the rest of us that the Earth is round.
