Navegando el Estrecho de Gibraltar / Sailing the Strait of Gibraltar

Ayer me sentí Pigafetta,

Yesterday I felt like Pigafetta,

Well, as in good adventures, one has a lot of sensations and emotions to share. In a few days as part of the crew of the Nao Victoria, it is difficult for me to choose which of them to share, but it is perhaps the bond I have felt with those crew members who first went around the world, which have captivated me the most. When I travel I always do it by the hand of imagination, she is in charge of recreating the historical scenarios I visit, and make me feel, with great detail, in the skin of some of the characters who lived there. This time the scenery is so real that the imagination can connect with the past in a unique way.

Let's start at the end...

Yesterday, on my first night watch moored in port (I love to feel like a cabin boy), I sat under the awning, in what today and yesterday was the officers' mess, completely open to the inclement weather. The silence of the outskirts of the port of Benalmádena and the gentle breeze could not have been more perfect for writing. On the Nao, the situation was a faithful mirror of the outside, tranquility and silence.

Sitting there for a few hours, I took out my notebook and pen, and amidst the gentle creaking and rocking of the ship, I began to write. What a real pleasure ladies and gentlemen! I felt teleported back in time, immediately connected with the character who will contribute to make this experience even more real, the gentleman Antonio de Pigafetta. For in the end, the scenarios in which we choose to live are infinite, and aligned with dreams, imagination and determination, they reach the point of becoming very real, so real, that you are living it. A song comes to mind that is very present among people from the South.... "vive la vida, igual que si fuera un sueño" (live life, just as if it were a dream) by the great Camarón.

Well, as I was saying, immersed in the ecstasy of being able to write on this stage, I started to recall some of the sensations, and the most intense that came to my mind was undoubtedly that of sailing with the foremast swollen thanks to the stern wind. At that moment, during the captain's watch, the first of the morning, it was my turn to take the helm of the Nao Victoria. The coordinates placed us about to enter the Strait of Gibraltar, this traveler has not been in another one like it!

The bow of the ship rose and fell over the horizon line, and from the wheelhouse, the first rays of a new dawn could be felt. In a dawn sailing on the high seas, with no shadows cast of any kind, the sun fills everything. It rises to become the lord and master of the Ocean, with an arrogance only at the height of a great king, and this one, by the grace of God.

The Nao Victoria is a ship with a soul of its own, the energy of each wave ridden, accumulated in its hull after 30 years of navigation, are perceptible to those who are able to feel the energy of the places. On her piloting deck, and between the "¡quillocabeza!" and the "caguendió" in Cadiz accent of the captain of the Nao, the connection with the elements is much more perceptible than I thought. The water, which passes through the keel to end up caressing the rudder, feels easy when one connects with the wood of which the Nao is made, it vibrates little, but it vibrates with every jump of the wave. The wind, poof, what to say about the wind, in this week sailing, I have been more in connection with my element than ever. I used to call everything wind, now I am getting to know them by their names.

This beautiful day, which began by greeting us with a relatively calm sea and an unbridled sunrise, also gave me an afternoon on the "carajo" (the "basket" at the top of the main mast) with a breathtaking view of the horizon... to the left, representing Europe... the coast of Tarifa! on the right, representing Africa, the Tangerine coast! I felt, (as it is easy to guess), as Espronceda's written beat, "Bajel pirata que llaman..."

The night began by climbing the steep wooden stairs from the hold to the deck. Looking up at the sky of a billion stars, from the base of the mainmast of a ship like this, with the two rigging raised like stairs to the Universe, is one of those images to which I give a few seconds of my conscious attention every night. Above, the elliptical sway of the tip of the mast against the immense sky, the sound of the westerly wind, and the creaking of the wood, served as a bridge to those men of the past. I was contemplating the same view as Magellan or Juan Sebastian Elcano?

See you next time!
